The history of Iran (or Persia) covers thousands of years, from the ancient civilizations of the Iranian plateau, the ancient civilization of Jiroft in Kerman province and Shahr-i Sokhteh ("the burned city") in the province of Sistan and Baluchestan, followed by the kingdom of Elam, between the present provinces of Khuzistan and Fars, the civilization of Lorestan and the flowering of the civilization of Marlik in the province of Gilan, and the Mannaeans who at the time origin are located south of Lake Orumieh, near the present city of Mahabad in the province of Kordestan but spread throughout the provinces of Azarbaijan, Medes and Persians who found the Achaemenid empire, the Parthians from the Sassanids to the present Islamic Republic of Iran.
